DUI pursuit ends in sticker bushes

On Feb. 27, a swing-shift patrol deputy initiated a traffic stop on a pickup truck that was swerving in the area of C St S and Military Rd S in Spanaway/Parkland. The driver refused to pull over, and he hit a curb while trying to turn onto Military Rd S. Since the deputy had probable cause to believe the driver was impaired, he was able to pursue him.

The pursuit went west to Spanaway Loop Rd S and then north towards Tacoma. Speeds never exceeded 60 mph, and when the vehicle approached 72nd St S and S Hosmer St, a Lakewood officer deployed stop sticks. The truck hit the sticks and slowed to 10 mph. Our deputy then used a PIT maneuver to bring it to a complete stop.

The suspect jumped out of the truck and took off on foot down a hillside covered in sticker bushes. Deputies quickly surrounded him and eventually gave up.

A records check revealed that the pickup truck had been reported stolen.

The suspect was booked into jail for DUI, eluding, possession of a stolen vehicle and resisting arrest.
