Car thief arrested during foot pursuit

Early this morning, at 1:15 a.m., a deputy was driving on Pacific Ave S near 108th St S and noticed a white Kia with its hazard lights on in a restaurant parking lot. The deputy ran the license plate and discovered it had been stolen from the Tacoma area.

Thinking the vehicle was unoccupied, the deputy pulled into the lot so he could start the recovery process. When he pulled in behind the vehicle, the rear brake light illuminated. The deputy turned on his emergency lights and ordered the driver to exit the vehicle.

While the deputy was waiting for backup, the suspect got out of the vehicle and fled on foot towards the gas station on 108th St S. The deputy gave chase and followed the male suspect onto 107th St S and then south onto Croft St S. At this point, a second deputy arrived and cut off the suspect’s path with his patrol vehicle. The suspect turned around and ran back towards the chasing deputy, who tackled him to the ground.

After a brief struggle, the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody. He was booked into the Pierce County Jail for possession of a stolen motor vehicle, resisting arrest and obstructing.
