Last night, at 9:57pm, a patrol sergeant spotted a pickup truck without taillights or a license plate driving on Steele St S in Parkland. As the sergeant followed the vehicle, he noticed several signs of impairment. When the sergeant turned on his lights and siren, the vehicle sped away.
Since DUI is a pursuable offense, the sergeant chased after the truck. During the 7-minute pursuit, deputies were trying to get in position to deploy stop sticks. The suspect nearly t-boned a patrol car and the truck was throwing sparks because of a flat tire.
The suspects got out of the truck while it was still moving and fled on foot at Violet Meadow St S and C St S. The 34-year-old female passenger was located within minutes. A K9 team arrived and started tracking the driver. While being interviewed, the passenger told deputies the driver’s name and said he was hiding nearby at his mother’s house in the 11400 block of Park Ave S.
After approximately 90 minutes of attempting to communicate with the suspect, he exited the house and was taken into custody.
The 43-year-old suspect was transported to the hospital for a blood draw. While there, he told the deputy that he thought we couldn’t chase him. He was booked into jail for DUI and eluding. He also had warrants for burglary and DUI.
