Deputy Involved Shooting, All Deputies Okay

The following information was released by the Pierce County Force Investigation Team:

Pierce County, WA, April 16, 2022:

 

On April 15, at 8:00 p.m., Pierce County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a possible child abuse in progress call at an apartment in the 200 block of 125th St. S. A 10-year-old child inside the apartment had called 911 and reported his father had been drinking and was trying to hit him and his 9-year-old brother. The two children had locked themselves inside a bedroom.

 

Deputies arrived on scene at 8:05 p.m. At 8:09 p.m. a South Sound 911 call receiver heard the suspect state he was armed with a pistol, and a deputy on scene advised South Sound 911 Dispatch, “He said he’s going to shoot at us.”

 

At 8:10 p.m. deputies advised Dispatch they had gotten the children out of the apartment through a window.

 

At 8:11 p.m. deputies advised Dispatch shots had been fired.

 

At 8:11 p.m. the suspect called 911 and advised he had been shot. A negotiator began speaking with the suspect. At 9:28

p.m. the suspect came out of the residence voluntarily and was taken into custody.

 

The suspect was transported to a local hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the shoulder.

 

No deputies were injured in this incident.

 

The Pierce County Force Investigation Team, comprised of members of multiple law enforcement agencies within Pierce County, was called to the scene for the independent investigation. The Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office was advised of the incident.

 

The involved deputy has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with their department policies.

 

This investigation is ongoing.
