About Jani Hitchen

I grew up in Olympia, the daughter of a single mother, when she became a widow and had to raise three very young children on her own. I attended public schools in Olympia and my mother was a member of the Olympia School Board, and leader in many community organizations. Growing up, I witnessed how her passion and energy could change the lives of those that lived in our community.

I moved to Pierce County in 1992 to attend Pacific Lutheran University. I completed my Bachelors in Education in December of 1996. Initially I worked as a substitute teacher throughout the region and my first full time teaching job was at Lochburn Middle School in the Clover Park School district. During my 10 years at Lochburn I finished my Masters in Educational Technology at UW Tacoma. In 2008 I moved to the Bethel School District and worked in three different schools, finishing my time as a science teacher (physical science, biology and physics) at Graham Kapowsin High School.

During the last 10 years I was a very active member of my union including being part of the Bargaining team and treasurer. I have also branched out from schools through my work to promote and educate voters by being a PCO (Precinct Committee Officer 29-651) and my engagement with other local political groups. I am a lifelong Girl Scout and believe that we need to take care of people and our natural resources.

I have lived in Parkland for almost 30 years and I now proudly represent the 6th Council District.
