Earthquake damage to public facilities totals an estimated $53 million in Pierce County, officials announced. The figure could go higher as damage assessment activities continue during the coming week. Executive John Ladenburg said the region is fortunate that a greater loss of life and more injuries didn’t result from the 6.8 earthquake Wednesday. “It is clear from the preliminary damage estimate that Pierce County experienced a significant quake impact,” he said. The damage estimate includes public buildings and facilities, roads and transportation, and public utilities. The estimate doesn’t include private individual or business loss. “This number is very preliminary at this point,” said Emergency Management Director Steve Bailey. “I would expect it to rise as additional damage becomes evident in the next few days.” County officials are working closely with state and federal officials on processing disaster claims. Residents and private business owners who incurred earthquake damage should call FEMA at 1-800-462-9029 or TTY 1-800-562-7585 to begin the application process.
