A number of weeks ago we had a proposal to accept the Master Plan for Chambers Creek properties. There was language within the plan that would allow extended stay housing as part of the golf resort – leased housing for 30 days or more with no limit on the length of stay. I do not support this because I believe that this is a public park and people should not be able to live on a public park. I wrote a blog, a newspaper column and many Facebook posts. Plus there were flyers delivered to 13,000 households to make sure that citizens were aware of the changes that were planned.
We had public testimony the afternoon of our meeting. Pierce County Council meetings start at 3 p.m. but because there were so many people testifying it went past 4:30 p.m., which is when the County City Building closes. The security people locked the doors at 4:30 p.m., preventing any late attendees from coming to testify. This is a major problem because as a public body we have to provide public access to our meetings. We have rectified this problem for future meetings by having additional notification oversight to security during Council meetings, as well as security has the ability to stream the meetings from their end.
Our legal staff has recommended that we have another hearing on this legislation. On December 5, 2017 at 3 p.m. we will have Proposal No. 2017-83 in front of us again. Although there was overwhelming support to remove the extended stay housing at our previous meeting, plus numerous emails, the majority of the Council chose to keep the language.
Do you want people living on Chambers Bay park for anywhere from 1 month to five years or even longer? The existing language does not speak to any limitations. I invite you to share your opinion on this matter. Please come to the meeting or email the Council at PCCouncil@co.pierce.wa.us.
